Introduction

Operating YVR safely and efficiently is our top priority. Connecting with our community is a key part of that effort.

From January 31, 2023, to March 1, 2023, we are seeking your input on communication, service, and potential supports during times of major travel disruption, like YVR experienced during the most recent holiday season.

Holiday Travel Disruption and Operational Review

Beginning December 18, 2022, a winter storm hit Metro Vancouver with prolonged sub-zero temperatures and considerable snowfall. Over the subsequent days, travellers at YVR experienced significant flight delays and cancellations, delayed or lost baggage, and tarmac delays. Even after the weather in the region improved, some disruption continued as weather in other parts of the country adversely affected service at YVR.

We know these events had a substantial and negative impact on thousands of passengers, their friends, and families over the holiday season. In response we launched a detailed operational review – known as an After-Action Review - utilizing international expertise and engaging the wider airport community, including our airline partners. The After-Action Review will help ensure that in the face of future disruptive events, whether caused by weather or other factors, YVR and the airport community are able to work effectively together to safely keep travellers moving.

Communication, Support and Public Engagement

In addition, we understand that the impact of the travel disruption was exacerbated by a lack of timely and consistent information available to travellers and the public. During Phase 1, participants noted that the most common impact they experienced related to communication issues with the airport or an airline.

We are asking you to complete this feedback form to hear directly from passengers and the public on how they want to be supported and informed during times of major travel disruption.

Safely operating an airport involves many organizations working together. While we are focusing primarily on YVR’s accountabilities, which are outlined under Key Information in the feedback form, questions do reference aspects of a traveller’s journey that are led by other stakeholders. All responses will be considered and will allow YVR to continue to work across the aviation ecosystem to enhance the overall travel experience for passengers.

Feedback received during this engagement will be considered along with recommendations from the After-Action Review, and will be summarized and shared with the public.
